TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Monday, November 20, 2017, the programs that earned ITA grants based on their participation in the inaugural ITA Community Service Month Presented by Limoneira.

ITA Community Service Month was created to spotlight all the great work in the communities ITA member coaches and student-athletes do on an annual basis. The Limoneira Hours Challenge provided a friendly competition by tracking the total number of hours that each school served.

During ITA Community Service Month Presented by Limoneira, more than 2,000 student-athletes served over 8,000 total hours of service in their community or on their campus. Projects ranged from community tennis clinics to hurricane relief to Breast Cancer Awareness projects to elementary school mentoring.

The College of Charleston women’s tennis team won the Limoneira Hours Challenge and $1,000 ITA grant by performing 470 hours of service during October. The team ran tennis clinics for their community, donated used tennis balls to pet shelters and to community members, and held a fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children Hospital and Breast Cancer Awareness.

The University of Alabama Birmingham women’s team generated the most buzz on Indi.com to earn the $500 ITA grant. Programs were asked to upload photos and video from their community service projects and share through Indi.com, share them on their social media feeds. The University of Alabama Birmingham worked with Habitat for Humanity.

All teams that performed 20-plus hours of community service were entered in a drawing, where the team selected received a $500 ITA grant. The College of Wooster took home the prize. During the month of October, the team was involved in a community tennis event and volunteered at their local elementary school.

The ITA would like to thank Limoneira for serving as the national presenting sponsor of ITA Community Service Month, as well as thank all of the programs across the country that participated.

Overview

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and its member schools participated in a month of service in 2017, with Limoneira serving as the national sponsor. During October, the ITA promoted its student-athletes and their service outside of the tennis court. Teams across all five divisions of college tennis participated in the Limoneira Hours Challenge, which tracked which teams completed the most service hours.

Why an ITA Community Service Month?

“A great measure of the success of our ITA tennis programs is that they are fully embedded in the lives of their campuses and in their communities. The ITA Community Service Month Presented by Limoneira will represent the totality of the body of work of all of our ITA programs combined in giving back as true leaders.” – Timothy Russell, ITA CEO
