NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (Nov. 6) – The opening round of the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships went mostly as scripted as nine of the top 10 seeds in both the men’s and women’s singles draws held serve Wednesday at The Tennis Club at Newport Beach and Newport Beach Tennis Club in Newport Beach, Calif.

Top seeds Yuta Ito of Texas and UCLA’s Elysia Bolton posted straight-set victories in their first-round matches.

However, Justine Leong of NCAA Division III Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and sophomore Elyse Lavender of NAIA Brenau University wrote their own stories as they knocked off NCAA Division I opponents. Leong defeated Stanford’s Janice Shin in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while Lavender outlasted Old Dominion’s Holly Hutchinson, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.

On the men’s side, Seward County Community College’s Gabriel Ortiz defeated NCAA Division I Cleveland State’s Nico Mostardi, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

The No. 9 seeds in both singles draws fell as Stanford’s un-seeded Sangeet Sridhar defeated Ondrej Styler of Michigan, 6-3, 6-4, and Lexi Ryngler of Texas posted a three-set victory over Florida’s McCartney Kessler, 6-4, 6-7 (0), 6-3.

Doubles play was highlighted by the North Carolina men’s duo of Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard defeating Columbia’s No. 1 seeded team of Jack Lin and Jackie Tang, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 10-3.

On the women’s side, Angela Kulikov and Danielle Willson of USC defeated No. 2 seed Jessie Gong and Samantha Martinelli of Yale, 6-1, 6-4. Vanderbilt’s Georgia Drummy and Christina Rosca (VAN) bested No. 3 seed Ksenia Kuznetsova and Valeriya Zeleva of UCF, 4-6, 7-5, 10-3.

The tournament continues Thursday with consolation draw play beginning at 8 a.m. (PT) followed main draw singles and doubles. Live streaming of featured men’s and women’s matches will be available along with live scoring for all matches.

The singles finals are scheduled for Sunday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club and will air live on ESPN3 with Bryan Fenley, Marc Lucero and Jasmine Minor describing the action.

The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships features 128 of the nation’s top collegiate singles players (64 men and 64 women) and 64 doubles teams (32 men’s team and 32 women’s teams). In its third year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, it is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions playing in the same tournament.

A series of events around the tournament are planned as Oracle will host a Pickleball and Pints Party at The Tennis Club on Friday. The event is scheduled from 6-8:30 p.m. and the public is welcome. A Question-and-Answer session on the recruiting process and college tennis with college coaches will take place Sunday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club beginning at 10 a.m. Finals Sunday will also include a Family BBQ starting at 11 a.m.
