2020 ITA DII National Women's Team Indoor Championship - Barry

The Barry women’s tennis team is bringing home another trophy to Miami Shores, Florida. The back-to-back-to-back NCAA champion Buccaneers took down No. 6 seed Hawaii Pacific 4-0 in the ITA DII National Women’s Team Indoor Championship.

In doubles play, No. 8 Hawaii Pacific put up a fight against No. 1 Barry but ultimately were overwhelmed by the Bucs’ depth. Playing at No. 3 doubles, Engelmann/Kong overcame the Hawaii Pacific duo of Waites/Busson to win 6-3. Razafindranaly/Barrere clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Ikioka/Ballach. Hawaii Pacific’s No. 1 doubles, Tilgner/Miyahara, were up 4-3 at the time of the clinch.

Barry sophomore Patricia Lopez started the Bucs off in singles. She rolled through her match against Jayme Waites; Waites was moved into the lineup due to Le Normand sitting out because of an injury in the semifinal match against Columbus State. Lopez won her match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

Point three came from senior Jil Engelmann at No. 1 singles. Much like Lopez, No. 5 Engelmann blazed through her match against Elodie Busson, 6-2, 6-1. Engelmann went undefeated in singles during the tournament including a 6-2, 6-1 upset over No. 4 Natalie Espinal.

Daniela Farfán capped off the match for the Buccaneers. After blowing through the first set against Hawaii Pacific’s Sarah Ikioka, 6-1, Farfán played a perfect set to finish the match.

From the first serve to the last, the championship match was under two hours. Barry took all six of the first sets. The Bucs blanked Washburn and edged out Nova Southeastern en route to the championship match.
