The Head Coach, Tennis is responsible for the management and administration of all phases of the Washburn University Men’s and Women’s Tennis Intercollegiate program and teams while demonstrating a cooperative attitude toward all other sports within the University’s Intercollegiate Athletics Program. It is imperative the employee develop and maintain full knowledge of the guidelines, rules and regulations of Washburn University, the MIAA Conference and the NCAA, and that tasks are performed in full compliance with them.
Scouts and recruits top-quality student-athletes for the University’s Tennis program. Works with University faculty and staff to develop relationships that will assist and support recruiting efforts.
Determines and implements strategies necessary to motivate players to maximum levels of individual and team performance.
Directs game strategies. Coaches individuals and teams during scheduled events.
Schedules and conducts regular practice sessions in and out of season as allowed by NCAA and MIAA rules.
Tracks academic progress of all student-athletes in the tennis program and establishes relationships that demonstrate interest in each individual and provide support for athletic and academic success. Establishes study programs and enforces requirements for class attendance and course make-up work.
Communicates and enforces rules and regulations regarding student conduct, appearance and behavior to facilitate student success, ensures compliance with rules and enhances the quality of the Tennis program at WU.
Determines and develops annual budget requirements and presents requests to the Athletics Director for inclusion in the Department’s annual budget request. Authorize and monitor budget expenditures to ensure compliance with authorized spending and proper management of the Tennis program’s annual budget.
Essential Job Functions of Position
Interviews, hires, manages and evaluates coaching assistants. Prioritizes and delegates administrative responsibilities to coaching assistants to maximize use of staff and ensure all administrative details are addressed.
According to schedules and University practice, makes travel arrangements for the Tennis team, allowing for timely arrival for practice and competition while minimizing time away from classes and costs to the University.
Develops, plans and hosts fundraising events for the Tennis program, participates in events sponsored by the Athletics department or other WU Athletic programs, meets with potential contributors to raise funds for the WU Tennis program and/or WU Athletics in general.
Attends conferences and seminars and works to maintain continual and thorough familiarity with all applicable NCAA, MIAA, University and Departmental rules and regulations; and to further develop knowledge of the sport. Actively seek ways to develop new methods and strategies that will ensure continued and on-going success of the University’s Tennis Program.
Actively promotes public relations with the media and speaks at engagements on behalf of the Athletics Department and Washburn University Tennis.
Performs additional job related duties as assigned or as appropriate.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience playing, coaching and/or teaching tennis.
Preferred: Master’s degree. Experience coaching/playing/teaching tennis at the college level.
Licenses, Certifications & Registrations
Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets University standards.
