Description of Work Unit

The Colorado State University Department of Athletics sponsors 16 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports and competes as a member of the NCAA Division I-FBS and the Mountain West Conference.  The University is located in Fort Collins, Colorado, 65 miles north of Denver.  More information on the University and its intercollegiate athletics programs can be found at and

Position Summary

The position is responsible for assisting with the overall coaching, administration, planning, management and direction of an NCAA Division I sports program competing as a member of the MW Conference. 

Position Supervises

This position may assist in the supervision of other personnel funded by the sport program including operations director/video coordinator/managers/interns/graduate assistants, etc. 

Decision Making

  • Assess skills and abilities of student-athletes and implement changes as needed
  • Determine best methods to instruct/coach/teach individual student-athletes based on each athlete’s skillset, learning style, strengths and weaknesses
  • Assess skills and abilities (athletically and academically) of potential recruits
  • Assist in the development of budget, competitive schedules, team travel
  • Assist in the development/management of summer camps/clinics

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in HPER, HES, Sports Management, Recreation, Business, Education, Marketing, Kinesiology, Liberal Arts, Communication, Sociology or any other field related to responsibilities and duties
  • Previous coaching experience required, preferably at the NCAA Div. I level
  • Previous recruiting experience required, preferably at the NCAA Div. I level
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules/regulations required
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficiency in designing/implementing effective teaching/coaching techniques
  • Computer and social media technology competency
  • Ability to demonstrate/instruct/coach highly competitive student-athletes
  • Understanding of academic, admissions and eligibility requirements
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and travel.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Competitive collegiate or professional playing experience preferred
  • Proficiency with JumpForward or similar compliance recruiting software program preferred

Essential Job Duties

Job Duty Category Coaching/Skill Development/Teaching of Student-Athletes


  • Assist with coaching/skill development/teaching as assigned by the head coach
  • Assist in the establishment of a philosophy and method of coaching/teaching that will result in winning records, conference championships and opportunities for post-season competition
  • Impart knowledge in coaching and teaching the sport including pre-season, in-season and off-season. Participate in designing programs that maximize the athletic and competitive success of student-athletes.
  • Evaluation of individual strengths and weaknesses of student-athletes and develop strategies to enhance performance. 
  • Influence and motivate student-athletes on and off the court

Job Duty of Category Recruiting


  • Assist in the development and implementation of appropriate recruiting strategies to research and select a qualified pool of prospective student-athletes including assessing individual talent, academic strengths and character
  • Communicate effectively with prospects, their parents/families, coaches and teachers through a variety of methods 
  • Be responsible for effective use of resources and methods in off-campus recruiting as well as official and unofficial visits
  • Comply fully with all NCAA recruiting regulations

Job Duty Category Program oversight


  • Assist in the oversight for all budget expenditures
  • Attend meetings as required by the NCAA, MW and University administration
  • Assume on active role in all practice and event management issues as necessary and appropriate for the successful conduct of practices and games
  • Be knowledgeable of fully comply with all appropriate rules and regulations of Colorado State University, the MW Conference and the NCAA 
    • Provide support for the Department’s overall rules education and compliance efforts
    • Report any knowledge of rules violations
    • Prepare, record and retain documentation as required.  
    • Contribute proactively to a culture of compliance in the program
  • Work effectively with a culturally diverse community and advance the Department’s commitment to diversity an inclusion
  • Support and enhance the Department’s commitment to academic success (including APR and Graduation Rates) and character development by reinforcing and supporting the efforts of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services including class attendance, structured study, learning assistance, orientation and life skills programming, student code of conduct, etc.
  • Support and contribute to the overall public relations of the Athletics Department and the University
  • Perform all media and external relations and promotional responsibilities in a professional and cooperative manner that reflects a positive image for the program, the Department and the University.
