Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) – Senior Leadership Position, Communications, Marketing and Advanced Media

Seeking a highly creative, innovative member of its leadership team, who will report directly to the ITA CEO and work closely with the ITA COO – either as a Managing Director or Senior Director, based upon background, experience, and expertise – the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) invites applications and nominations for a team-based, senior leadership position. This position will provide direction, oversight, and management of communications, marketing, and advanced media initiatives. 

The ITA, as the governing body of college tennis has as one of its top strategic initiatives to “raise the profile and tell the stories of college tennis, while continuing to grow the brand of the ITA.”   The ITA is seeking an individual who can help position tennis amongst college athletics, Olympic Sports, and the tennis ecosystem.

Managing/Senior Director of Communications, Marketing, and Advanced Media

Responsibilities include:

  • Reporting directly to the ITA CEO
  • Serving as a trusted member of the ITA Senior Leadership Team o Active participant in matters related to strategic planning
  • Building upon a very solid existing communications foundation, working in consultation with the CEO to conceive, design, and execute a new communications, marketing, and advanced media plan o The timing is good for the person who will be hired for this position to have the freedom and flexibility to craft/lead the strategic plan and tactical implementation in these areas
    • Integrate the communications, marketing, advanced media plan with an overall digital/technology strategic plan
    • Oversee the content management and visual aspects of the ITA website and any new mobile delivery channels
  • Supervising communications staff
  • Serving as the ITA’s primary staff point of contact for broadcast relationships and rights agreements (e.g., working to build the ESPN relationship)
  • Bring to the job and further develop and foster contacts and relationships with major national media
  • Lead content creation and curation (feature stories, press releases, thought leadership) for the ITA website and other outlets, including YouTube and possible ITA/USTA college television show
  • Collaborate with media and marketing contacts at ITA allied partners – including, but not limited to, NCAA, and the USTA, USPTA, and PTR – and ITA sponsors 
  • Other leadership duties as assigned

Scope of Work to include, but not be limited to:

Major Strategic Goals/Areas of Focus:

  • Craft and coordinate a unified national message about college tennis and the ITA
  • Elevate the ITA’s communications strategy in order to increase presence and communication with university decision-makers such as college presidents and athletic directors, as well as conference commissioners
  • Facilitate the ITA’s Thought Leadership

  • Tell the major stories of the ITA and college tennis – engaging national media contacts and applying expertise to attain high-profile publication and broadcast outlet placement

Ongoing Objectives:

  • Promoting the ITA’s Major Championships – including, but not limited to, building audiences (both in-person and through broadcast channels)
    • Promoting the ITA’s comprehensive awards program for players and coaches that honors excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship, and lifetime achievement
    • Promoting the ITA Alumni Network and community engagement activities including, but not limited to, Tennis for America
    • Increasing the profile of and growing the annual ITA Coaches Convention

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree preferred) 
    • A minimum of 5-10 years of experience required to be considered for Senior Director level 
    • Demonstrated ability of how the candidate has “moved the dial” in previous positions – and has provided proven, creative leadership (required)
    • Ability to use various datapoints/dashboards/engagement analytics to help provide feedback and guide the ITA in resource allocation (required)
    • Ten years or more experience to be considered for Managing Director
  • Collegiate communications/marketing/advanced media or related sport communications/marketing/advanced media experience (desired)
    • Strong tennis interest (desired)
    • Staff managerial experience (desired)
    • Budget management experience (desired)

This full-time, 12-month administrative appointment includes competitive benefits (i.e., medical, retirement, paid vacation) and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
