Team Draw | Singles Draw | Doubles Draw

As we close out another collegiate dual-match season, we’ll look back at the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Team, Singles, and Doubles National Championships to recap the champions as well as the history made in Champaign, Illinois over the month of May.

Texas Claims Back-To-Back NCAA Division I Women’s Team National Championship

As Head Coach Howard Joffe stated in his postmatch press conference after Texas won their second-consecutive National Championship, someone had a better shot of winning the lottery than his team winning the National Championship after the team’s first few weeks of play.

However, win they did as Texas took down conference foe Oklahoma in the 2022 NCAA Women’s National Championship match to head back to Austin with another Team National Championship.

Playing some of their best tennis towards the end of the season, Texas took home the Big 12 Championship before beginning their NCAA run where they built on this momentum throughout the Tournament.

Entering as the No. 4 seed in the Tournament, Texas swept both of their opponents in the opening two rounds of play before beating Auburn 4-1 in the Super Regionals to advance to the National Finals in Champaign.

In the Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals of the 2022 NCAA Championship, the Longhorns only dropped five points as a team, while taking down the No. 5, No. 1, and No. 2 seeded teams in the 2022 Championship.

Texas now joins Stanford and Florida as the only two Division I Women’s programs to repeat as National Champions.

Peyton Stearns Crowned the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Singles National Champion

Fresh off of her second Team National Championship in as many years at Texas, Sophomore Peyton Stearns checked off another impressive feat this year, winning the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Singles National Championship.

Ranked amongst the top singless players in the ITA Singles Rankings all season, Stearns entered the 2022 Women’s Singles Championship as the No. 2 seeded player, just behind 2021 NCAA Singles Champion, Emma Navarro.

In the Tournament, Stearns took down the likes of Elizabeth Scotty (UNC), Erin Cayetano (USC) (7), as well as Connie Ma (Stanford) in the Championship Match.

With the win, Stearns concluded her 2022 campaign with a 33-2 record in singles play, including a 24-2 mark in dual match play from the Longhorns No. 1 position this season.

Stearns becomes the first player in the long and storied history of Texas Women’s Tennis to be crowned the NCAA Singles National Champion.

NC State Duo of Daniel/Miller Win 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Doubles National Champions

For the first time in program history, the NC State Wolfpack will be taking home a National Championship as Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller are crowned the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Doubles National Champions.

Capping off a historic season in which they were ranked within the top three of the ITA National Rankings for the majority of the year, the duo pair of Daniel and Miller made more history this past May in Champaign inking their name as National Champions.

Entering as the top-seeds within the Doubles Tournament, the duo were put to the test early and often within the Tournament as in the Second Round and Quarterfinals, Daniel and Miller had to pull out the match in a third set Superbreaker to advance on in the Tournament.

Not phased by the pressure, Daniel and Miller went on to win the Semifinals and Finals match in straight sets to earn the program’s first National Title in the program’s 45 years of existence.

The Wolfpack were the only team this postseason to make the Quarterfinals in the Team, Singles, and Doubles National Championship Tournaments.
