WTA – Coordinator, Player Development

Summary:   

Player Development is the umbrella institution for education and the WTA’s resource center.  The priority function of this role is to coordinate and track the Player Development program requirements for players and Player Support Team (PST) members and the Age Eligibility Rule, with the goal of implementing the rules consistently and fairly and facilitating the acquisition and development of professional skills for competitors on the WTA.  

The role will require administrative implementation and servicing of player programs, on-site and remotely.  Further, this role will act as a primary education and orientation to the athletes onsite, with a focus on Player Development and pre-Full Member education.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Report to VP, Player Development & Member Education regarding all PD and AER related activity and monitoring
  • First point of contact for questions on Player Development and AER (from players, PST, ITF, governing bodies, tennis community in general)
  • Maintain, update and track Player Development requirements
  • Communicate the weekly onsite Player Development assignments to relevant departments (Supervisors, PR, PH, Comms and Tournament personnel)
  • Manage users and assign online courses to players/PST on the WTA University (the WTA’s LMS) through each phase of PD Journey and Player Journey
  • Assist VP, PD and Member Education in updating PD forms, flyers and related materials
  • Responsible for Age Eligibility Rule Tracking, reporting weekly to entry authorities regarding limits/violations and communicating with the ITF on player scheduling, and monitoring the WTA database for future entries 
  • Weekly Review and approval of WTA, USTA and ITF Wild Card requests
  • Draft and send warning and violation letters to relevant parties (player, PST, federation, ITF). 
  • Assist VP and IT to maintain accuracy of tracking and reporting programs
  • Manage assignments and communication with Top Junior/ Pro Path players, their PST and Federations
  • Media Training- consult and work with Communications department on identification of Player Development participants and facilitate athlete participation and engagement
    • Provide relevant highlights to the WTA Management regarding players in PD and those at that highest level of Juniors
    • Deliver the BJK Power Hour during the US Open, with Legends.  Work in conjunction with Legends to facilitate mentoring for PD players and other player members.
    • Facilitate Player Education with fundamental Tennis-wide Integrity programs (ITIA – TADP and TACP) as well as Safeguarding.
  • Generate AER and Player Development statistics and reporting 
  • Order and maintain inventory on collateral materials for events (including gifts)
  • Assist VP to maintain Player Development Policy and Procedures 
  • Player Development Advisory Panel: 
    • Support SVP Member Relations and VP Player Development & Member Education on related research (data and literature reviews)
    • Serve as communication liaison to the panel: distribute statistics, findings, inquiries and recommendations; prepare and submit meeting minutes
  • Support the execution of member benefits and the strategic plan and goals of Member Relations to provide centralized resources, training, best practices and efficiencies 
  • Actively listen to and serve the players. Respond to immediate concerns, utilizing knowledge of strategic goals and strong emotional intelligence skills.  Report larger and department specific issues to appropriate staff (e.g., SVP Member Relations, VP Player Relations)
  • Educate players on WTA business, including but not limited to:  Calendar, rule changes, Rankings, Integrity, social media, safety and overall player well-being considerations.
  • Assist with the preparation, organization and implementation of onsite member and constituency meetings
  • Develop rapport with players, coaches, agents and support team members, educate and update them on the Tour issues and facilitate their participation and completion of onsite requirements (documentation, annual forms, Rookie Hours, etc.)
  • Be knowledgeable on WTA wide member programs and Tennis-wide integrity programs and involvement of related member groups (TIU, TADP)
  • Work with Supervisor to provide quality member service (including enforcing Tournament standards); facilitate resolution of player issues with Tournament/Player services. Facilitate servicing of the on-site WTA office.
  • Assist Communication staff as needed, with on-site media requests, Pro-Ams. Serve as a liaison for player information.
  • Provide Marketing with input from a player perspective on sponsorships with a player program element.
  • Administrative:
    1. Assist VP with administrative components of Player Development and relevant Member program
    2. Participation in weekly staff meetings, providing onsite player feedback and delivery key education topics and resources
    3. Completion/submission of related onsite reports, expenses
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years business communications experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Three years professional or University tennis experience.
  • Proficient with WTA Rules and conversant in the ITF Rules of Tennis.
  • Athlete Development background; PAADS certified preferred

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • The ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to debate issues, drawing from a broad knowledge base.
  • Multi-lingual
  • A team player who respects and interacts well with members being served.
  • Adapts easily and shows initiative 
  • Computer skills using word processing, excel, publishing & graphics, and email programs

Travel Requirements:

Travel up to 50% of the role with focus at the WTA 125s and 250s, to domestic and international destinations

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

None 

Position Type/Work Schedule:

Full Time, 40 hours a week. Typical schedule will be Monday-Friday, plus weekend travel and response to onsite/event driven needs as required for events.

The employee is required to sit for long periods; use close/distant vision; hear using the telephone; bend at the waist and knee; communicate verbally and electronically with worldwide constituency; use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
