ST. PETER, MN – Today’s Semifinals saw the tournament’s top 4 seeds battle it out, for a chance to play in the Championship Match. At Saturday’s end, it would be (2) Case Western and (4) Wash U. who would represent their programs in tomorrow’s matchup.

Our first Semifinal of the day at the Swanson Tennis Center had Case Western (2) facing off against CMS (3) in what would be the match of the tournament thus far.

Doubles action found the defending Men’s Team Indoor Champions, Case Western, down 1-2 before singles play. Case would drop courts 2 and 3, but secure a win at #1 doubles.

In singles, Case Western would secure a quick win on court 1 before CMS took the advantage back, with a win on court 6. Down 2-3, Case would find crucial wins on courts 4 and 5, giving them the advantage at 4-3. The final two courts on #2 and #3 singles would need to be decided in third sets, and it would Case Western that would win both decisive sets. Vishwa Aduru would provide the clinching point at #2 singles, while Michael Sutanto would help finish off the morning for the Spartan’s 6-3 victory. This will be Case Western’s second straight final here at the Men’s D-III National Team Indoor Championship.

In the second Semifinal match of the day, top seed U. Chicago (1) faced off with Wash U. (No. 4) in what was a rematch of the D-III Men’s National Team Indoor Semifinal from last year, which saw Chicago take the win into the Final.

Wash U would go on to take the 2-1 advantage with doubles wins on courts 1 and 2, while Chicago would take court 3.

Singles play was no easy task for either team, as both teams would take 3 first sets. Chicago would even up the score 2-2 after a win on court 2, and then take the lead, 3-2, with a win on court 4. Wash U. would need 3 of the last 4 singles matches to fall their way, and that they did. Not only did they secure all 4 of the remaining singles courts, they did so while winning 3 third set matches. The only straight sets singles win for the Bears would be on court 6, which provided the clinch after a 7-6 7-6 (12) victory. The Bears now look to take home their first D-III Men’s National Team Indoor Championship since 2014.
