After beginning with 64 teams just a few days ago, the field has now dwindled down to just 16 as we head towards Super Regional play in the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships.
With many tightly contested matchups in the first two rounds, it was the top-seeded teams who excelled during the first rounds of play, as the hosts and higher seeds account for 15 of the 16 teams in the Super Regional.
Last season’s National Champions, Virginia, keep their hope of repeating as champions alive after cruising to wins over Navy and Ole Miss in opening rounds. Virginia is trying to match the stretch that they had from 2015-2017 in which they won three straight NCAA National Championships.
Texas, who came in as the top seed in the entire Championship, looked dominant in their first two matches of the NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns last won the NCAA National Championship back in 2019 and will stand a strong chance of returning to the promise land after compiling a 24-3 record to this point in the season.
The only non-seeded team moving on to the Round of 16 is Stanford. Playing in the Columbia Regional, the Cardinal were able to down St. John’s (NY) 4-0 in the first round before taking down the hosts 4-2 in the second round to keep their championship hopes alive. This marks the second straight year in which Stanford has gone on the road and taken down a top seed to advance to the Super Regionals.
In total, the SEC leads all conferences with five teams represented in the field of 16, while the ACC and Pac 12 follow closely behind with three teams apiece.
This Super Regional round will be the final round played on campuses across the country. Teams who win this weekend will earn their spot into the NCAA National Finals in Lake Nona, Florida when a National Champion will be crowned.
