With snow flurries falling outside, inside the Nielsen Tennis Center there was nothing but fiery competition on the opening day of the 2022 ITA Division I Women’s National Team Indoor Championship.

With eight matches being played on the opening day of competition, the tide of the tournament has gone the seeded teams way as all eight top-seeded teams picked up first-round wins on the day.

North Carolina (2) and Virginia (7) got things kicked off in the opening matches of the day as the Tar Heels took down Ohio State 4-1 while the Cavaliers battled to a 4-2 victory over Florida.

Following right in suit, Georgia (3) took down Washington 4-0, while NC State took care of Auburn winning 4-2 to wrap up the morning session of matches for the day. 

The afternoon sessions today saw a lot tighter competition with the feature match of the day, California (4) vs Texas A&M coming down to a third set tiebreaker to determine who would advance.

Coming out with a 4-3 win over the Aggies, the Golden Bears joined Pepperdine (5), who took down Old Dominion 4-1, in the victory column after the early night matches.

Oklahoma (8), who is making their first ITA Indoors appearance, locked up their first ITA Indoors win tonight beating hosts Wisconsin 4-0 as they move on to play rival Texas tomorrow.

Rounding out the afternoon and the first day of competition was the Longhorns (1) who took down USC 4-1 to show why they have been ranked No. 1 in the ITA Top-25 Coaches Poll every week since the preseason.

Action will continue tomorrow at the Nielson Tennis Center as the Quarterfinals kick off at the 2022 ITA Division I Women’s National Team Indoor Championship.
