TEMPE, Ariz. (November 21) – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps first-year student Justine Leong and junior Boris Sorkin of Tufts University finished atop the final 2019 Oracle ITA NCAA Division III National Rankings that were announced Thursday.
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps duo of Leong and Catherine Allen concluded the fall atop the women’s doubles rankings, while Matt Chen and James Hopper of Case Western Reserve claimed the No. 1 spot on the men’s side.
Leong won the Division III ITA Cup singles and doubles titles, posting an 8-0 singles record and straight-set victories in each match. Leong defeated teammate Allen in the singles final to capture the crown and qualify for Oracle ITA National Fall Championships where she recorded a first-round victory over NCAA Division I Janice Shin of Stanford.
Sorkin repeated as Division III ITA Cup singles champion after winning the title in 2018. He went 4-0 in singles as well as 2-1 in doubles with Josh Belandres at the ITA Cup. Sorkin was honored with the James O’Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Award at the ITA Cup. His strong October performance earned him UTR/ITA National Division III National of Player of the Month accolades.
Leong and Allen teamed to win the ITA Cup Division III women’s doubles title, while Chen and Hopper partnered to capture the men’s ITA Cup doubles championship.
