UTR ITA Division I Women’s Player of the Week: Sara Daavettila

Coming off a National Team Indoor Championship win, Sara Daavettila (UTR 11.58) of UNC was named the UTR ITA Division I Women’s Player of the Week. The Tar Heel senior played the No. 2 position in singles where she handled three of her singles opponents in straight sets.

Currently 6th in UNC women’s tennis program history with 121 career singles victories heading into senior season, Daavettila owns a 104-31 record, the 9th best winning percentage (78.75) at Carolina.

En route to the championship match, Daavettila defeated NC State’s Anna Rogers (UTR: 11.14), Duke’s Yasmine Mansouri (UTR: 10.95), and Arizona State’s Sammi Hampton (UTR: 10.70).

In the Indoors quarterfinal match, Daavettila and Graham took down the No. 1 doubles pair from North Carolina State, Anna Rogers and Alana Smith. The victory clinched the doubles point for the Heels.

No. 2 seed North Carolina (10-0) has reached the finals six years in a row, seven of the last eight years and eight times since 2010. UNC is currently ranked second in the Oracle ITA Division I Women’s Team Rankings.

The UTR/ITA National Player of the Month/Week awards program honor male and female individuals from all five divisions (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and Junior College) beginning with monthly awards in the fall (September, October, November) and moving to a weekly award during the spring dual-match season.

A player’s current Universal Tennis Rating Powered by Oracle and ITA ranking and that of his or her opponents will be part of the criteria used in the selection of the winners. Institution athletics communications directors will submit nominations to the ITA for selection.
